It was on this day in 1796 that Colonel Simeon Perkins wrote in his diary of a strange occurrence that happened in New Minas.
A story was making the rounds that around sunrise, near the Bay of Fundy, three people witnessed as many as fifteen ships in the air, and a being with outstretched arms.
Perkins added “the story did not obtain universal credit but some people believed it.”
That is basically how UFO reports are viewed now, nice to see things haven’t changed in over 200 years.
For context Perkins was a highly respected individual. He led the defense of Liverpool from attacks during the American Revolution, French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars. During his lifetime he held 27 different government positions.
His diary, which he wrote from 1766-1812 is an essential document for that period of time in Nova Scotia. The original copies of Perkins diaries were donated to the Town of Liverpool and are now held by the Queens County Museum.
