The bus company in charge of student pick up and drop off for most Halifax area school says they aren’t feeling the nationwide driver shortage.
Student Transportation Canada holds the largest contract for the Halifax Regional Centre for Education.
The company’s Chris Harwood tells us they worked hard to make sure they’re ready to serve the community.
“We are well aware of the nationwide shortage of school bus drivers. In response to these headwinds, in the HRM, we have gone all out to ensure we have enough drivers ready to serve the HRCE community when school starts.” Hardwood wrote in an email. At this point – we will have enough professional drivers to start school next week.
They currently have 20 job postings for drivers in the Halifax area.
However, they are ready for the first day of school on September 7.
The busing work in Halifax was split up among three companies in 2020 after complaints about the way things were being handled under Stock Transportation. The province terminated its 10-year contract with Stock just three years into it.
Student Transportation of Canada will provide service to the family of schools connected to Citadel High, Duncan MacMillan, Eastern Shore, Halifax West, J.L. Ilsley, Millwood, Lockview, Musquodoboit Rural and Sir John A. Macdonald.
Southland Transportation will provide service for the family of schools connected to Auburn High, Bedford, Forsyth Education Centres, Charles P. Allen, Cole Harbour District, Dartmouth High, Island View, Prince Andrew and Sackville High.
Stock Transportation ended up with the contact to bus special-needs students.
