Good news if you already have solar panels installed on your home, with the province announcing this week that you will still be able to sell excess energy back to the grid.
Nova Scotia is still rolling ahead with amendments to the provincial Electricity Act that will prevent any new solar projects from being able to earn money for the extra energy.
During the third reading of the amendment bill, Natural Resources and Renewables Minister Tory Rushton explained existing solar customers will retain the ability to earn money for their energy, “It was well within the regulations and legislation when it took place so we really didn’t want to penalize them any further,” Rushton said.
The amendments will allow new solar projects to send excess power back to the grid, however, they will only receive Nova Scotia Power credits that can be used to bring bills down to $0, but any excess power beyond that will yield no compensation.
Those grandfathered in will be able to receive financial compensation for any power generated in addition to NS Power credits.
