The MLA for Dartmouth South is running for the leadership of the Nova Scotia NDP.
Claudia Chender officially announced her bid to replace Gary Burrill on Monday morning.
She revealed the news with a promotional video on Twitter.
“Over the last five years, I’ve learned a lot about how government works and what people and communities need,” she says. “And I’ve always fought for what matters to you.”
Chender has served as MLA for five years.

She says it’s time to build a government and economy that works for all Nova Scotians.
“We can build this party right across our province,” Chender says. “We can do it by working together. By respecting our Earth, by addressing the real challenges people are facing, like affordability, healthcare, and equity.”
The video includes endorsements from many, including Halifax Needham MLA Lisa Lachance and Dartmouth North MLA Susan Leblanc.
Current leader Gary Burril announced his plans to step down in November and his intention to stay on as the MLA for Halifax Chebucto. He’s held party leadership since 2016.
The vote on a new leader is expected in June.
