The Ecology Action Centre is celebrating after the company proposing to turn Owls Head into a golf course pulled out.
Lighthouse Links penned a critical letter withdrawing their offer to buy and develop the land Tuesday.
Karen McKendry, Wilderness Outreach Coordinator for the Ecology Action Centre, said the letter didn’t recognise the work done by the Save Owls Head Provincial Park community group.
“The developer did not actually recognize the community pushback,” she said. “It was kind of a vindictive letter that, sort of, put that there was a lack of government support, and that they were so disappointed.”
McKendry said the grassroots movement had been fighting for years to stop the development.
She said, regardless of whether the developer acknowledged that, it’s a win.
“I think this is what a little success this looks like on the environment,” she said. “We have so many defeats, it’s hard to remember, sometimes, what a gain looks like.”
McKendry said this is only the first step, while this developer isn’t going to go forward with a project, the land is still unprotected.
She said she wants to see government make the land a provincial park, so no development can happen there ever.
