The soft glow of candles will light up Truro on Friday in honour of a 23-year-old man who was killed over the long weekend.
The Maritime Sikh Society is holding the vigil for Prabhjot Singh Katri. He was murdered at an apartment building on Robie Street early Sunday morning.
The society says in a Facebook post “the brutal loss” of his life has sent shockwaves and heartbreak throughout the community.
Members are calling it a hate crime, but police haven’t said that’s the case.
Katri had been working two jobs to support his family in India.
The society is asking community members, especially youth, who work late hours to be cautious and aware of their surroundings.
Its president Dr. Simardeep Kaur Hundal met with Truro Mayor Bill Mills and Truro Police Chief David MacNeil at Katri’s family home this week to call for justice for the young man.
The society says they’re satisfied with the investigation so far, but they cannot share additional details.
Meantime, the Town of Truro is flying The National Flag of India at half mast at its town hall to show support for the Maritime Sikh Society and the Indian Community.
The vigil will start at 6 p.m. on Friday at Truro Mall on Robie Street. It will end at the place where Katri lost his life, 494 Robie Street.
A GoFundMe to send his body back home had raised over $83,000 as of Thursday morning.
