I can’t bury the lead on this one, James Gunn has done it! Somehow he has made a gory, funny, heartfelt masterpiece. There is fantastic action, legitimate laughs and I won’t lie I was tearing up at some points.
Not really a sequel to the first Suicide Squad, it doesn’t ignore it either. Characters from the first movie obviously have a previous relationship, but if you haven’t seen the first movie it wouldn’t take away from this experience. Gunn gives every character time to breath and you become connected to them very quickly. Which is actually a cruel trick as not all of them are standing when the credits roll.
This very real feeling that any of these characters could die adds an extra layer to the tension. Usually when you get to the climactic final battle of a superhero film you are just enjoying the fight, not worrying if the hero will live. Here you are. I was on the edge of my seat, hoping that no one else got wiped out.
The performances here are top notch, everyone is at the top of their game. Especially Idris Elba (Bloodsport), Daniela Melchior (Ratcatcher 2) and Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), their character arcs provide a lot of emotion to the over the top action. This is also the best Harley we have seen so far. Also a giant nod to the team that created King Shark, he is cuddly and terrifying all at once.
If there is anything that will hold The Suicide Squad back it is the R rating. It is definitely not for kids, and that is the one area DC films has struggled with, except for Shazam.
This is a movie that needs to be seen in theaters, it is big, unapologetic, and amazing.
